5 simple ways to transform your space

The state of our environment has a huge impact on our state of mind. We are spending an unprecedented amount of time in our homes this Spring, so it’s important to make sure it is an uplifting and calming environment.

“Spaces absolutely affect people’s moods. Just because we are in a society that doesn’t acknowledge it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. When you walk into a room, you feel it.”
- Carolyn DiCarlo, New York designer and wellness driven architect.

Redecorating your home is not only productive but also a great way to fill your time during the lockdown.

Here are five changes you can make to your space to brighten your mood:

1) Rearrange your furniture -

Rearranging a room is the most cost-effective and satisfying way you can transform a space, simply moving your bed can completely change your perspective on a room.

“Placing your bed to the north is something indigenous cultures have been long practising” says DiCarlo. “By placing it in that direction, you get better qualities of stillness and calm.”

Ensuring the angles of the furniture align is key in creating a harmonic space. You can also add mirrors to the space to make the room feel larger and lighter.

2) Buy houseplants online -

Bring the garden centre to your front doorstep and order an array of houseplants online.

Not only do houseplants improve the appearance of your living space, they also improve air quality by reducing carbon dioxide levels in your home.

Houseplants enhance mood, boost your immune system and productivity. So, what are you waiting for? Create your own urban jungle today.

3) Hang pictures of your loved ones -

Although we can’t be with all our loved ones at the moment, we can surround ourselves with happy memories of them.

This is the perfect time to print out all your favourite photos from Facebook and sort out any camera prints that are collecting dust.

Framing and hanging up these photos will immediately personalise your space. Now instead of staring at blank walls, you’ll be reminiscing on the great times, and looking forward to more to come.

4) Mood lighting –

Lighting is a sure way to transform a room. In contrast to workspaces, bedrooms and living rooms suit dim mood lighting. Warm tones will make your space feel cosier and more comforting.

The Phillips Hue systems wireless-enabled mood light allows you to control the colour and dimness of the light through an app. Alternatively, you can purchase an Auraglow light bulb which allows you to change the colour of your existing lamps via remote.

5) Candles or a diffuser –

Aromatherapy is healing for the mind, body and soul.

Light a candle or use an essential oil diffuser and let the aromas do the rest.

Whether calming lavender, uplifting orange or energising eucalyptus, you can transform your mental state through a scent.

You can even purchase essential oil diffusers which double up as mood lights, so you can transform the atmosphere of your room with the flick of a switch.
