Rebuild your Skin Elasicity

Elastin and collagen are two incredible components within our skin that keep it looking smooth and holds everything in place. "Elasticity is what makes youthful skin snap back when you press it," says Miami Beach dermatologist, Leslie Baumann. Without these two things our skin begins to droop and fine lines and wrinkles begin to appear. Unfortunately, as we age, we lose them. Our skin becomes thinner as we age and therefore collagen and elastin are lost in this process.

Elastin and collagen are two incredible components within our skin that keep it looking smooth and holds everything in place. "Elasticity is what makes youthful skin snap back when you press it," says Miami Beach dermatologist, Leslie Baumann. Our skin becomes thinner as we age and therefore collagen and elastin are lost in this process.

There are few ingredients that dermatologists agree upon that can help to keep your skin looking great. One is Retinol, this is a derivative of Vitamin A, which when applied topically onto your skin can help to promote collagen production. Dr. Frederick Brandt says, "We know that they stimulate collagen production and cellular regeneration.” Retinol has also been known to help in cases of acne-prone skin too. The other ingredient that can be helpful with protecting your skin is Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3. 'Extensive research has shown niacinamide works to protect skin from environmental damage and also helps skin make more collagen and hyaluronic acid. It improves hydration, reduces signs of ageing, diminishes enlarged pores, and significantly lessens skin discolouration,' says Paula Begoun. In protecting your skin, it means that the loss of elastin and collagen can be lessened.

Once elastin is lost it’s not possible to properly replace without invasive treatments such as botox. As with most things related to skincare, prevention is the key. The most damaging factor for your skin is sunlight. It might feel amazing and you might feel better when you have a tan but

"Long-term exposure causes collagen to break down and elastin to degrade," says Brandt. We understand that it’s not possible to stay inside all of the time and UV rays have been known to make it through glass! But the best way of protecting your skin from the adverse reactions to sunlight is using sun cream.

In addition to looking out for certain ingredients and sun cream, "Dehydration leads to oxidative stress, which generates free radicals," says Brandt. "Without moisture, your skin isn't able to repair itself and suffers even more damage." So make sure that you stock up on your moisturiser and drink plenty of water.
