The Ultimate Skincare Guide for Oily Skin

person Posted By: Luana Basso

Oily skin is a common skin concern that can give you that glow without the "up". But the right skincare routine can help keep the grease at bay.

Oily skin can be caused by several factors: genetics, diet, stress, and climate being a few. At its core, though, oily skin is the result of increased sebum production, which can lead to clogged and enlarged pores.

Along with managing stress and visiting a GP or dermatologist to help get your hormones in check, there are lots of benefits of a consistent and specially tailored skincare routine.

How do you get oily skin?

The hormones responsible for oily skin are called androgens. These are male hormones that both men and women have. They sometimes cause excessive sebum production. The pores then widen as they cannot process the high sebum production. The combination of too much sebum and a thickening of the skin and inside of the pores due to dead skin cells means the sebum can’t be secreted from the pores. This results in blackheads and white bumps under the skin (whiteheads).

We talked to Dr. Hana Patel, GP specialist in skin health, to bring you the ultimate skincare guide for oily skin.

The Cleanser

Cleansing twice a day (as people with oily skin are more likely to get a break out of acne and clogged pores). When washing your face, use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
