Why SPF Is Your Cold-Weather Companion

Why SPF Is Your Cold-Weather Companion

As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, it's easy to think SPF (Sun Protection Factor) can take a backseat until the warmer months return. After all, if the warm sun has taken a hiatus there is no need to worry. But unfortunately, that’s not the case. Despite the weather being cold, the sun still emits harmful ultraviolet rays (UV), even throughout Autumn/Winter. However, the truth is that wearing SPF in winter is just as important as it is in the summer. Here's why:

UV Rays are Still Present

Despite the sun's summer heat may be diminished during the winter, harmful UV rays are still at play. These rays can penetrate through clouds, and even windows, making it essential to not miss SPF out of your skincare routine all year round. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can result in premature ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, and overall damage to the skin.

Snow and Shiny Surfaces

If you like in a snowy region, it pays to be particularly diligent about SPF. Did you know the snow can reflect up to 80% of the sun's UV rays? This effectively doubles the rate of exposure to these harmful rays - so whilst you’re enjoying the snow, don’t forget to protect any exposed parts of your skin.

Indoor Heating

As previously mentioned in our How To Tweak Your Skincare Routine For Autumn journal, indoor heating can dehydrate your skin and lips. Despite a radiator not giving off UV rays, dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, so when you’re heading out on a winter walk or quick errand - don’t forget sunscreen.

Thankfully some skincare products already provide an SPF, Avant’s Ceramides Soothing & Protective Day Cream has SPF 20, perfect for using daily on your face and neck to protect your skin from those UV rays. The moisturiser aims to neutralise the effects of everyday exposure, to environmental aggressors - preventing irreparable DNA damage to maintain the skin's youth. And that's not all, it keeps skin moisturised and plum.

What exactly are Ceramides I hear you say? Ceramides are Lipids (fats) found naturally in the skin. They make up about 50% of the skin's composition, playing a vital role in protecting your skin against environmental threats and keeping skin looking young.

If you’re searching for a product with a higher SPF, look no further than our Multi-Defense Ceramides Protecting Veil Broad-Spectrum with SPF 50. The ceramides aim to form a protective layer over the skin, helping to plump and hold moisture. The White Tea Extract works to protect the skin from cell damage, whilst simultaneously soothing the complexion, and the Jojoba aims to nourish skin, whilst helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Remember, dehydrated skin is much more prone to UV rays, so it's important to not miss out on moisturiser alongside SPF in your winter skincare routine.
