The drop in temperature can leave our skin feeling dry, rough, flaky and uncomfortable. To tackle this many of us seek new products, ingredients and routines, while this can be helpful, one thing to remember is that your skin type hasn’t changed. Creating an effective winter skincare routine, doesn’t mean switching out every skincare product in your current routine, it may just need one or two alternatives to provide your skin with a little extra hydration and nourishment.

What happens to our skin during the winter months?

The contrast of warm heating indoors and harsh low temperatures outdoors, can leave our skin feeling dry and tight, a feeling many of us have experienced. The not-so-perfect blend of cold and heated air, and low humidity causes the skin barrier to degrade. Some symptoms of winter skin can include:

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Dehydration
  • Tightness
  • Flaking
  • Discomfort
  • Sensitivity

Top 5 tips for protecting your skin during winter

1. Ensure your skincare routine includes humectants

Humectants are key in maintaining skin hydration. A humectant is a moisturising agent known for its ability to draw water into the skin and retain that moisture, so your skin stays hydrated longer.

Look for: hyaluronic acid, glycerine, hex-anediol, butylene glycol and sorbitol.

2. Shield your skin with an SPF

That’s right, SPFs aren’t just for summer, 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate clouds: it’s crucial to protect your skin from UV rays in the winter too. We recommend our Ceramides Soothing & Protective Day Cream SPF 20, which aims to neutralise the effects of everyday exposure to environmental aggressors – preventing irreparable DNA damage, to maintain your skin’s youthful bloom. Ceramides are also a great addition to your winter skincare routine as they can help fortify your skin barrier against the harsh winter conditions that can cause a variety of skin issues.

3. Dial down on exfoliation

You may think the only way to get rid of those flaky bits of skin is to exfoliate, but before you do hit pause, and here’s why. This can further impair your natural skin barrier. We recommend exfoliating around once per week and avoiding combining your physical exfoliants with chemical exfoliants. A great exfoliant to use if your skin barrier has been compromised during the winter is a PHA. PHA stands for Polyhydroxy Acids, which are different types of exfoliants. They work to exfoliate away dead skin cells, promote cell turnover, and reduce the appearance of skin damage. One of the best things about them are that they are one of the most gentle exfoliants out there, so for those with irritated skin this winter, we welcome polyhyrdoxy acids with open arms.
