Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin: What’s The Difference?

person Posted By: Ailsa Watson

First, it’s important to identify whether your skin is dry or dehydrated so you can adjust your skincare routine accordingly.

Often confused as the same thing, dehydrated skin is actually different from dry skin. While both skin concerns have similarities, their root causes and how to treat them differs. Both can be affected by our diet, environment and daily routine.

First, it’s important to identify whether your skin is dry or dehydrated so you can adjust your skincare routine accordingly, ensuring that you are achieving the results you want.

Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin is classified as a skin state rather than a skin condition. To simply explain, if you have dehydrated skin, your skin is thirsty. When you skin is short on moisture, it can result in fine lines & wrinkles, break outs and a lack of radiance. It is very common and most of us have experienced it. The number one reason why we want to treat this as quickly as possible is that dehydrated skin can in fact damage our skin’s barrier, which keeps water from escaping.

If your complexion is looking dull, you're experiencing dry patches here and there, you’re starting to notice wrinkles more and you’re breaking out more than usual, this could all be signs that your skin is dehydrated.

One of the best ways to treat dehydrated skin is Hyaluronic Acid. We recommend using our Marvellous Nocturnal Resurfacing Hyaluronic Facial Serum with our Supreme Hyaluronic Acid Anti-oxidising DUO Moisturiser to support your skin’s barrier. To help restore your skin's bounce, it is also a great idea to add a mist into your routine. A couple of spritzs before applying your moisturiser will help to lock in moisture.

Dry Skin

Unlike dehydrated skin, dry skin lacks oil. The real way to identify if you have dry skin is by your skin’s texture. Is it rough, cracked and a bit leathery? This can be because it lacks suppleness and elasticity. While dry skin isn’t a temporary issue you can solve, you can improve your appearance by building the right skincare routine.

The first thing that you should do is add a rich, nourishing oil to your skincare regime. This will help to restore your skin's natural oils that have been left behind. We also recommend avoiding foaming cleansers, these can be very stripping on the skin and you don’t what to strip any of your skin's natural oils that you have left. Oil-based or cream cleansers are a great way to inject moisture back into your skin.

It can also be beneficial to treat from the inside out. Our Bio Marine Collagen Radiance Activator Capsules contain Marine Collagen which aims to repair skin collagen and elastin protein fibers and produce a significant thickening of the outer skin surface. Further benefits include decreased wrinkles, improved skin hydration and firmness.
