Seasonal Skincare: How To Transition Your Skincare From Winter To Spring

person Posted By: Ailsa Watson

What is seasonal skincare and why should we be changing our winter skincare routine to a spring skincare routine?

A new season is upon us, making it the ideal time for us to reassess our skincare, what's working and what’s not. Have you ever noticed that what was once your favourite moisturiser just isn't performing the same anymore? This could be due to the change in season.

Should I Switch My Cleanser In Spring?

Short answer, yes. During the harsh winter months our skin is stripped from its natural moisture. Making our winter skincare routine all about moisture-locking and treating dry skin. Not sure if you have dry or de-hydrated skin? Read our article here to learn more.

When spring comes, and the temperature rises, the weather allows our skin to produce more of our natural oils. For this reason, we recommend using a lighter cleanser. Focus on cleansing gels, foams, milks and lightweight lotions.

Out With The Old And In With The New

Relieve your skin from winter hibernation and let it glow. Adding a gentle exfoliator to your routine two times a week will help to brighten and renew your skin, by promoting cell turnover. Rejuvenate your skin for spring with our Glycolic Acid Rejuvenating Face Exfoliator, but make sure not to over do it! A common mistake when it comes to exfoliating is getting carried away and damaging the skin in the long term. Skin cells have to be allowed the time they need to rise to the surface and rest for a few days before being removed.

We recommend exfoliating 1-2 times per week. But here are a few tips

  • Listen to your skin - is your skin feeling a little sensitive? Then skip your exfoliator and go straight to your serum. It’s okay to change things up. If your skin is trying to tell you something, listen to it.
  • Be careful around the eye area - your eye area requires different care than the rest of your face due to its sensitivity.
  • Don’t forget your lips - our lips can suffer through the harsh winter months, try multitasking with your exfoliator and rejuvenate not only your skin but your lips too

Do I Really Need To Use A Different Moisturiser In Spring?

Yes, it’s time for a change. While your much loved moisturiser might have gotten your skin through the harsh winter months, it won’t have the same affect in spring. Just like we swap out our winter parkas for a denim jacket, we need to reassess our rich creams for a light-weight option.

Since there is more humidity in the air, a heavier moisturiser is not necessary. Hydration is still key as a warmer climate, sweat and sun exposure all dehydrate your skin.

Our Pro-Intense Hyaluronic Acid Illuminating Day Cream is a much loved light-weight moisturiser that aims to illuminate your skin and, consequently, your day.

What Are Antioxidants? And Should I Be Using Them All Year Round?

When it comes to anti-ageing ingredients, antioxidants are essential. So what are the skin benefits of antioxidants?

  • Treat signs of ageing
  • Calm irritation
  • Promote a youthful appearance
  • Revitalise dull skin
  • Protect skin from damage
  • Smooth fine-lines

While there isn’t one particular antioxidant that does all of the above, there are many different ones that focus on specific skin concerns. That’s where we can help.

Vitamin C

Best for: Brightening & Revitalising Dull Skin

Also known as ascorbic acid, Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that has an endless list of benefits, such as hydration, promoting collagen production and protecting against sun damage, which all result in brightening your skin.

Vitamin A

Best for: Anti-Ageing

Did you know that Retinol is just concentrated Vitamin A? This well loved antioxidant isn’t just a trend, the hype is real. Retinol smoothes fine less & wrinkles, brightens skin, fades scars and hyperpigmentation and can also help to treat acne. Vitamin E

Best for: Hydration

Also known as tocopherol, this antioxidant works has both a humectant and an emollient.

  • Humectant - to absorb water into the skin
  • Emollient - to trap water in the skin

Antioxidants are great to include in your skincare routine all year round, however we recommend Vitamin C, A & E during spring. Especially Vitamin C, as this can help with UV protection.

When Should I Wear SPF and Should I Be Re-Applying?

All day, everyday! By now most of us have learned that SPF isn’t only for summer and we should be applying it all year round.

But when we say SPF, SPF and more SPF, we are highlighting the importance of using the right amount so that it protects your skin throughout the day. It is important that you apply the product generously. So don’t be too sparing. If you are also spending most of your daily activities outside, you should realistically be re-applying every 2-3 hours.

Whether you are inside or outside, UV rays (UVA & UVB) have damaging affects on your skin 365 days of the year.

But what is the difference between UVA & UVB?

UVA - Makes up approximately 95% of the UV light that reaches your skin. This is what causes your skin to tan. Although this is something most of us strive for each summer, it can be extremely dangerous. As the UVA makes contact with our skin, it penetrates and damagers every layer.

UVB - Makes up only a small percentage of the UV that reaches your skin, however it is still dangerous. The majority of UVB is absorbed by the outermost layer of the skin.
