Facial Oils For A Healthy Complexion
Facial oils are fairly new to the market. But what makes them different from your ordinary moisturiser? What benefits can they bring to your skin?
How are they different to moisturisers?Facial oils are normally thinner than moisturisers. Moisturisers are a complex combination of both oils and water based minerals and so can have issues getting into your skin. Due to this, the products have a higher concentration of active ingredients in them. This high concentration means that you don’t need to use as much but your skin can still reap massive benefits. Dr. Rebecca Tung, chair of the Division of Dermatology at Loyola University of Chicago says, "Some can nourish the skin, while others can be potential irritants — so choose wisely." It has been known that some oils can clog your pores, but well thought out formulation and choosing ingredients that you know work well with your skin helps.
What are the benefits? These oils are also lipophilic which means that they are attracted to water. When they are used on your skin this means that they work towards locking in the skin that you already have. For people with dry skin it’s highly recommended that you use a Facial oil after you’ve applied your moisturiser as it helps to lock in the moisture from your moisturiser. Those with oily skin are naturally more wary of Facial oils, however that doesn’t have to be the case. You do need to use less however people with oily skin can notice that it helps your skin in different ways.
Facial oils do a lot more than just help to lock in the moisture in your skin. They can also help protect your skin from the environment. Many are enriched with vitamins known as antioxidants which work to protect your skin from free radicals. These antioxidants help to create a barrier between your skin and the external toxins to keep the bad stuff out of your skin.
As well as this, facial oils have also been known to have anti-inflammatory properties. It depends on the type that you choose, however those containing a Vitamin E base such as Argan oil or Yangu oils are ideal for dealing with irritations.
They also work to help give your skin a perfect base for makeup, making your skin appear plumper and smoother. Some have also suggested that certain oils such as macadamia, jojoba and carmellia are good at pulling out grime and fats from your pores, making your pores appear smaller. "Using jojoba oil in moderation can actually reduce oil production, making a great addition to your topical acne regimens, which can be drying," says Dr. Tung.
