Glycolic Acid In Hand Cream
Glycolic Acid has become a very important ingredient in skincare over the last few years as we’ve discovered all of the benefits that come from using them. It’s a naturally occurring substance made from sugar cane which means that even people with sensitive skin can use it. According to Krista Eichten, licensed esthetician, "Glycolic acid has a small molecular structure, giving it the ability to travel deep into the layers of the skin. Once there, the acid dissolves excess sebum and dead skin cells, revealing smoother, brighter, and younger-looking skin." This ingredient has become known for its great exfoliating properties as well as its ability as a moisturiser. It’s been known to treat rosacea, psoriasis and melasma.
But where do my hands come into this? The skin on the backs of your hands is notoriously sensitive. They are one of the first places that the signs of ageing are likely to arise. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hands may disproportionately show your age. This is due to the fact that they are constantly in the sun (one of our biggest agers) and various other ingredients that we touch in a day. Things such as hand sanitizers are great to keep your hands clean however the ethanol within it can be very damaging for your hands. This means that it’s incredibly important to team it up with good hand cream, preferably one that contains an SPF, antioxidants or humectant properties.
Glycolic Acid works to remove the outer layer of dead cells from your complexion which means that in general when you’ve used it, you may notice that your complexion is evener. This is helpful for your hands as it means that the skin on the back of your hands can look more even. In some cases, when used with a bleaching agent, Glycolic Acid has also been known to help postpone or even get rid of age spots. Age spots are likely to occur on the back of your hands as a sign of ageing.
In addition to this Glycolic Acid has been known to work as a humectant (a fluid which transfers liquid from the air into your skin) leaving your skin hydrated as well as helping to promote collagen. When your skin is properly hydrated, it can hold its shape better and in some cases even give it a more pumped appearance.
