The Power Of Ceramides

You might have never heard of Ceramides, however, they are a key part of your skin that helps to protect it from anything nasty that try to harm your skin.

"Ceramides are fatty acids in the skin that help to maintain the skin barrier and retain moisture and hydration," Shereene Idriss, dermatologist of Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. They are found in the cell membrane in the upper layer of your skin and make up 50% of your skin’s natural barrier against potential damage. Think of them as the mortar between the bricks of your skin (the bricks in this equation are your skin cells). They work to protect your skin from losing lots of water and against environmental factors that can affect your skin.

Without this layer, you would find that your skin would be more dry, itchy and generally more irritated.“Skin needing replenishment will benefit most from ceramides. That includes those with eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, dryness or those suffering from a compromised protective barrier as a result of sun damage or over-use of active ingredients like glycolic acid,” explains celebrity facialist Michaella Bolder.

Unfortunately, as we age our skin loses Ceramides which is part of the reason why our skin becomes drier and pesky signs of ageing begin. In addition to just ageing in general, Ceramides can become damaged by exposure to the sun, which is why it’s important to include them in your skincare. As well as applying sun cream, even on cloudy days.

“Ceramides are naturally already found within skin so they’re great for everyone including those with combination or oily complexions. Just choose a formula based on your skin type,” advises Bolder.
